Breakfast, keynotes, panel discussions, workshops, fireside chats focused on equity, empowerment and allyship in tech. From product to culture to education to advocacy – learn new solutions, meet diverse people who care, be stretched in a safe environment, and gain new tools and strength to advocate for change. End the day with networking and h’ors d’oevres to unwind and connect with good people.

At this year's Tech Inclusion 2019 Conference in San Francisco, Karan Mehra will share how the growing dialogue around allyship inspired him to start a grassroots initiative at Bloomberg. He and like-minded colleagues, united by an agenda to spread awareness, created informative content and socialized it among their colleagues. They incorporated statistics to call attention to the importance of allyship. They used personal stories to connect with their colleagues. They engaged the in-house expertise of researchers like Rachana Bhide. Incorporating lessons learned along the way, they drove meaningful change across Bloomberg’s Engineering organization. Karan will share his experience to inspire others to lead their own grassroots organizational change.

Featured speakers cover how today’s wealth of information drives business and product decisions across industries, and share insights for the future.

At the May 2018, Future of Data: New York Meetup, senior software developers Esther Kundin & Amit Anand talked about how Bloomberg has been working to push the edge of high-performance low-latency HBase. In their talk entitled "HBase Coprocessors – Uses, Abuses, Solutions," they discussed the performance boosts from using coprocessors, as well as the challenges posed for memory usage, garbage collection, logging, and deployment in a production setting and how these were addressed.

To learn some of the best practices that Bloomberg has found with developing and deploying HBase coprocessors, download their slides here.

Spark Summit brings the Apache Spark community together. Many came to hear from leading production users of Spark, SparkSQL, Spark Streaming and related projects. Attendees found out where the project development is going, and learn how to use the Spark stack in a variety of applications.

Joy Chakraborty, Distributed Application Architect, delivered a presentation entitled "Secured (Kerberos-based) Spark Notebook for Data Science" in which he provided technical design and development insights to set up a Kerberosed (secured) JupyterHub notebook using Spark. Joy showed how Bloomberg set up the Kerberos-based Spark-notebook-integrating JupyterHub, Sparkmagic, and Livy. Check out the slides here and watch Joy’s presentation below.Software Engineer Shubham Chopra also delivered a talk entitled "Spark and Online Analytics" about how Bloomberg uses Spark Server as a server runtime for online analytics. In this talk, he tries to identify specific areas where slow-down or failures can result in the largest hits on online-query performance and potential solutions to address these. Check out his slides here and watch Shubham's presentation below.

Bloomberg senior software engineer Armin Burgmeier presented a talk entitled "Using Conda to Build a Custom Data Science Distribution at Bloomberg" about the experiences our team has had using the conda package manager to build a custom distribution of free software packages combined with Bloomberg-specific libraries for data retrieval and analytics, targeting other internal teams of developers as consumers. Conda helped solve one of our central challenges which is avoiding inadvertently breaking the our users' code, while providing an up-to-date Python software stack. The talk also discussed the architecture of our infrastructure based on conda-forge and buildbot.

Dhruv Madeka, Quantitative Researcher at Bloomberg, presented about bqplot, a Python plotting library based on D3.js that offers its functionality directly in the Jupyter Notebook, including selections, interactions, and arbitrary CSS customization. In bqplot, every element of a chart is an interactive widget that can be bound to a Python function, which serves as the callback when an interaction takes place. This allows the user to generate full fledged interactive applications directly in the Notebook with just a few lines of Python code. The talk also covered bqplot's interaction with the new JupyterLab IDE and future plans.

Machine Learning @Scale is an invitation-only technical conference for data scientists, engineers and researchers working on large-scale applied machine learning solutions. ML is critical to a broader range of systems than ever before: from augmented reality to language technology and everything in between. Today’s ML practitioners face daunting scale challenges since their systems and services may be used by millions if not billions of customers. In his talk entitled "Search and ranking at Bloomberg," Parth Vasa, the Head of Data Science for Bloomberg Engineering, discussed the challenge of providing effective search for financial markets, balancing the need for accuracy and speed, the diversity of the data, and the difficulty of gaining an accurate picture of markets from moment to moment. He also described the ways in which machine learning is helping Bloomberg to address this challenge.[bbg-facebook-post url="https://www.facebook.com/atscaleevents/videos/1856003391339423/"]
